Description
As part of the second generation of Dodge Ramchargers (1981–93), the 1987 Dodge Ramcharger 150 4x4 was a rugged, full-size SUV that featured a boxy, utilitarian design with a removable steel roof over the rear section, making it a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts and off-roaders.
Under the hood, the ‘87 Ramcharger 150 could be had with a 5.2-liter V8 or optional 5.9-liter V8, paired with a three-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The 4x4 drivetrain provided solid off-road performance, aided by the SUV’s robust suspension and high ground clearance. The vehicle rode on a short wheelbase, which enhanced its maneuverability on trails and rough terrain. Inside, the Ramcharger offered a no-frills but functional interior, with seating for up to five passengers, along with a large cargo area. Despite its robust size, the Ramcharger was known for its relatively smooth ride and towing capability.
Though overshadowed by competitors like the Chevy Blazer and Ford Bronco, the Dodge Ramcharger has since gained a cult following among classic SUV collectors. As Motor Trend wrote in 1987, “With its V8 power and part-time 4WD, the Ramcharger doesn’t just go off-road — it charges through it.”
