Description
The 1986 Chevrolet El Camino Conquista was part of the fifth and final generation of the El Camino line, which ran from 1978 to ’87. By 1986, the El Camino had firmly established itself as a unique blend of car and truck — a coupe utility vehicle that offered both passenger comfort and cargo utility. The Conquista trim was a mid-level appearance package that added distinctive two-tone paint schemes, special badging, and upgraded interior and exterior trim, giving it a more upscale look compared to the base model.
Under the hood, the 1986 Conquista typically came with either a 4.3-liter V6 or a 5.0-liter V8 engine, paired with a three- or four-speed automatic transmission. The El Camino’s rear-wheel-drive layout and car-like suspension made it more comfortable and better-handling than most pickups.
As the penultimate model year before the El Camino was discontinued in 1987, the ’86 Conquista holds a special place in automotive history. Popular Mechanics highlighted the El Camino’s versatility, calling it “a vehicle that can haul mulch on Saturday and cruise Main Street on Sunday.” It represents the final evolution of a vehicle that defied categorization and became a cult classic among enthusiasts.
