A Chevrolet engineer said of the 1986 Camaro, “We’re matching our talent and imagination against some of the top performance car engineers in the world. And the result is truly exciting.” And after a slow performance start for 1982’s third-generation Camaro, this sleek 2+2 did become exciting. In 1986 four- and six-cylinder engines were available, along with carbureted 5.0-liter V8s. However, Corvette’s Tuned Port Injection intake manifold was a recent Z28 option, and its long intake runners added a ton of torque and provided excellent drivability over the carbed versions.
As the driver was banging through the five-speed’s gears (or letting the overdrive automatic do it for them), they enjoyed a surprisingly good ride on Z28’s 101-inch wheelbase and sport suspension. And the cabin was comfortable, replete with a sport instrument cluster featuring a large speedometer and tachometer. All things considered, Camaro had good visibility for a low sport coupe — especially if it was equipped with T-tops.
This 1986 Camaro Z28 is equipped with the 5.0-liter TPI engine, still wears its original paint, and is ready to cruise in style with the T-tops off.
