Description
“Luxury. Only in a Jeep!” Originally introduced in 1963 as the Jeep Wagoneer, the model evolved over decades, and by 1984, the “Grand” designation was added to reflect its premium status. The 1985 model, produced under American Motors Corporation (AMC), featured a body-on-frame design, and was powered by a 360 cu-in (5.9-liter) V8 engine, paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and Jeep’s advanced shift-on-the-fly Selec-Trac 2WD/4WD system.
What set the 1985 Grand Wagoneer apart was its distinctive woodgrain exterior paneling, plush leather and cloth interior, and amenities like air conditioning, power windows, and cruise control — features uncommon in SUVs of the era. It was one of the first vehicles to successfully merge the comfort of a luxury sedan with the utility of a 4x4.
Despite its aging platform, the Grand Wagoneer remained popular due to its charm and capability. As Road & Track magazine wrote, “Though its underpinnings date back decades, the Grand Wagoneer continues to deliver a unique blend of ruggedness and refinement. It’s the Range Rover for the American heartland.” The 1985 Grand Wagoneer stands as a symbol of Jeep’s innovation and the growing American appetite for vehicles that could handle both the backwoods and the boulevard.
