Description

The 1980 Triumph TR8, developed by British Leyland and based on the wedge-shaped Triumph TR7, was designed to appeal to the American market. With its powerful V8 engine and open-top styling, the TR8 was nicknamed the “English Corvette.” Its 3.5-liter Rover V8 delivered significantly more performance than its four-cylinder predecessor.

Production of the TR8 began in the late 1970s, but the 1980 model year marked the peak of its availability, especially in the U.S. Most TR8s produced were convertibles, as British Leyland responded to strong demand for open-air motoring in North America. The car featured a five-speed manual transmission, independent suspension, and disc brakes, offering a spirited driving experience that contrasted with the more sedate TR7.

Despite its performance and distinctive styling, the TR8 suffered from the broader issues plaguing British Leyland at the time, including labor strikes. As a result, production numbers remained low; approximately 2,700 were built in total, making the TR8 a rare and collectible vehicle today.

This well-maintained and repainted 1980 Triumph TR8 Convertible stands as a symbol of what could have been — a bold attempt to revive British sports car dominance with V8 power and modern design.
