Description
The 1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 was the pinnacle of the W116 S-Class lineup and one of the most advanced luxury sedans of its era. Introduced in 1975 and produced until 1981, the 6.9-liter variant was based on the long-wheelbase 450SEL but featured a massive 6.9-liter M100 V8 engine producing approximately 250 horsepower and over 360 lb-ft of torque. This gave the car exceptional performance for its size, with a 0–60 mph time under 8 seconds, making it one of the fastest sedans in the world at the time.
Beyond raw power, the 450SEL 6.9 was notable for its sophisticated hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension system, which delivered an exceptionally smooth ride and superior handling. It also featured early innovations like ABS (introduced in 1978), automatic climate control, power-adjustable seats, and extensive sound insulation. The 6.9 was hand-built in limited numbers and carried a hefty price tag, reflecting its status as a flagship model.
This 6.9 was acquired by its current owner in 1996 and is finished in black with a sunroof, European-specification headlights, and tinted rear windows. The cabin features black leather upholstery complemented by burled walnut wood trim, and a Nakamichi cassette stereo is linked to an aftermarket amplifier and speakers.
