Description
In the mid-1960s, BMW set out to create a smaller, sportier counterpart to its Neue Klasse sedans, resulting in the 1600-2—an agile, lightweight two-door introduced in 1966. Its success led to the debut of the BMW 2002 in 1968, which paired a larger 2.0-liter engine with the same engaging chassis, establishing BMW’s reputation for affordable, driver-focused performance.
In 1971, BMW introduced the 2002 Tii, a high-performance evolution of the standard model. Equipped with a Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system, the Tii delivered 130 horsepower, improved throttle response, and quicker acceleration compared to its carbureted counterpart. It also featured larger brakes, stiffer suspension, and subtle visual updates like a blacked-out grille and unique badging.
The 2002 Tii struck a near-perfect balance between daily usability and spirited driving, and is widely regarded as a foundational model that helped define BMW’s performance legacy.
