Description
From its 1962 introduction, the Pontiac LeMans provided affordable power for the Poncho faithful. This model started out as a premium version of the Tempest, with sportier and more luxurious trim. But by 1964-65, the Tempest/LeMans line grew into an intermediate-sized car on GM’s new A-body platform — when it was upstaged by a new option package named GTO. And by 1966, the GTO had become its own model.
In 1968, like many of GM’s vehicles, the LeMans styling changed from sharp to curvy, and by 1971 the LeMans name was thrust back into the spotlight, defining all of Pontiac’s intermediate models. In 1972 the base LeMans was offered in several body styles including a Sport convertible, and there was even a Luxury model in two- and four-door hardtop versions. Buyers also had lots of powertrain options, and could choose from numerous engines including a six cylinder and five V8s, along with auto or manual transmissions.
This PHS-documented 1972 Sport Convertible is rare with just 3,438 built, and also is said to be just one of 59 GTs built with a 350 V8. Plus, it underwent a total restoration that culminated in a stunning Cardinal Red finish, a pristine white interior, and an upgraded 400 cu-in V8.
