Description
In the mid-1960s, BMW identified a niche in the market for a smaller, more accessible counterpart to its larger four-door "Neue Klasse" executive sedan. Tasked with bringing this vision to life, corporate design director Wilhelm Hofmeister entrusted the project to Georg Bertram and Manfred Rennen. Their collaborative efforts yielded a remarkable creation: the 1966 production 1600-2. This two-door marvel was crafted to be five centimeters (two inches) shorter in wheelbase and approximately 25 centimeters (10 inches) shorter in length than its "Neue Klasse" counterpart, achieved primarily through the artful bobbing of the rear deck. While the 1600-2 may have been less lavishly appointed than the "Neue Klasse," it excelled in areas that mattered most—lighter, faster, and boasting superior handling. Building upon the success of the 1600-2, BMW introduced the larger displacement 2002 in 1968. This iconic model not only inherited the performance prowess of its predecessor but also heralded a new era for BMW, establishing the brand as a purveyor of high-quality, affordable performance vehicles.
