Description
Chrysler’s contenders in the booming pony car class finally arrived in the fall of 1969, simultaneously launching the redesigned Plymouth Barracuda and the all-new, slightly larger Dodge Challenger. At launch, the Challenger was available in two series, the Challenger and Challenger R/T (Road and Track), and in three body styles, Two-Door Hardtop, Convertible, and Two-Door Hardtop S.E. The range was powered by virtually every engine in Chrysler’s inventory, offering eight options ranging from a slant-six to the thundering 425 horsepower 426 cu-in Hemi V8. The standard transmission was a three-speed manual, with a four-speed manual and three-speed automatic available as options. Customization continued with a laundry list of options including power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, as well as 22 paint colors including 10 “High Impact” shades. The Challenger’s virtually limitless customization contributed to well-equipped examples becoming among the most collectible Chrysler cars ever produced.
