Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

The 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 marked the debut of the second-generation Camaro, showcasing a sleeker, more European-inspired design compared to its predecessor. Built on GM’s new F-body platform, the 1970 Z/28 featured a longer wheelbase and wider stance, improving both handling and ride quality. Under the hood, it retained the high-revving 350-cubic-inch LT-1 V8, rated at 360 horsepower, borrowed from the Corvette. This solid-lifter engine, paired with a close-ratio Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, made the Z/28 a formidable street and track performer.

Stylistically, the Z/28 stood out with bold stripes, a front chin spoiler, and a rear deck spoiler, emphasizing its performance pedigree. The 1970 model year was unique, as it was introduced mid-season due to production delays, making it a one-year-only design before federal regulations prompted changes in 1971.

Praised for its balance of power, handling, and aggressive styling, the 1970 Z/28 remains a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts. It represented Chevrolet’s commitment to performance during the golden age of muscle cars, blending race-bred engineering with street-ready appeal, which Car Life magazine reported, “Cornering grip borders on the fanatical… In the upper speed ranges, the car is very nearly neutral, and all you need to do is turn the steering wheel.”

This 1970 Camaro is a true factory Z/28, produced in Norwood, Ohio the 4th week of May 1970. The body plate on the cowl shows this is an original Mulsanne Blue (Code 26) over blue standard interior (Code 715) Z28 Camaro, but the stripes were originally Black (Code 19). It was restored in 1996, with the original powertrain replaced with a 434 stroker Small Block and an M22 Muncie "Rock Crusher" manual transmission. While it needs some work, it has the potential for performance beyond the original Z/28’s.

Ownership History

This 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is offered from The Burnyzz Collection of no reserve automobiles.

The consignor reports, “The original engine and transmission are long gone, replaced with the 434 Stroker and an M22 Muncie "Rock Crusher" manual transmission. This car was ‘restored’ in 1996 in New Jersey and the body is straight and rust free. Unfortunately, the paint has not aged well, and the surface of the car now has a ‘braille’ (bumps) patina. The car will need a complete repaint to correct it and will need to be taken to bare metal to keep the issue from coming back up again. The transmission is said to be ‘new’ however the synchros do not line up appropriately. To drive the car, you have to hit a gear rolling as once you come to a stop the car will not go into a gear unless you shut the car off first. I think a complete rebuild is called for as someone didn't put this one together right.”
