The 1970 Buick GSX was the GM division’s bold entry into the peak of the American muscle car era. Introduced as a performance and appearance package for the Gran Sport (GS) 455, the GSX was designed to compete with the likes of the Pontiac GTO Judge and Oldsmobile 442 W-30. It was available only as a hardtop coupe and came standard with the massive 455 cubic inch V8 engine, producing 350 horsepower in base form or an underrated 360 horsepower with the optional Stage 1 package—making it one of the most powerful muscle cars of its time. The GSX stood out visually with its aggressive styling: bold striping, a rear spoiler, hood tachometer, and unique colors—only Saturn Yellow and Apollo White. Just 678 units were produced in 1970, making it a rare and highly collectible model today. While Buick was known for luxury, the GSX proved it could deliver raw performance without sacrificing refinement. But for some reason they never offered a GSX convertible, and the idea of such an open-air cruise missile has captured the imagination of builders for decades — like this Skylark ragtop that has had a four-year transformation into the Buick GSX that should have been.

A previous owner stated, “This 1970 custom built two-door convertible Buick Skylark was rebuilt in honor of my brother-in-law who passed away before he was able to finish the build. While the mileage is listed at 64,000 miles, the engine is a brand new 455 (non-matching), along with a fully rebuilt body, and beautiful Pyrite Brown exterior paint. The upholstery and convertible top are all brand new in a stylish Fawn interior. The entire under carriage has been redone, including transmission, brakes, rear end, and front end.”
