Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Chevrolet has long played a central role in the history of Indianapolis 500 pace cars, becoming the most frequent and iconic brand associated with the event — and in the late 1960s, the Camaro was in the spotlight. The popular pony car made its Indy debut in 1967, followed by a memorable return just two years later in ’69, when a Dover White Camaro Convertible with Hugger Orange stripes led the field for Indy’s 53rd running.

Chevrolet produced 133 specially prepared Camaros for the event, including two official pace cars, equipped with high-performance 396 cubic-inch V8 engines, Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmissions, and heavy-duty components for high-speed reliability. These replicas were used as festival and courtesy cars during Indy Speedweek. To capitalize on the excitement, Chevrolet also released 3,675 pace car replicas under the Z11 Indy Sport Convertible package. Most were powered by a 350 cu-in V8 and Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 automatic transmission.

This well-maintained 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z11 RS/SS Pace Car was No. 35 of 43 festival cars that were on the track with the original pace taking dignitaries on a parade lap. It wears its original pace car stickers, including “Official Pace Car of the 53rd Annual Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, May 30, 1969” on the doors and “500 Festival” on the rear fenders.
