Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Globally respected for top-flight, air-cooled Porsche engine development and service, Thoroughbred Motorsports of Corry, Pennsylvania, was founded by Dr. Karl Hens— a man whose experience and knowledge have been honed by a lifetime dedicated to building precision Porsche powerplants. Along his journey of automotive excellence, Dr. Hens amassed a collection of special air-cooled Porsche sports cars spanning every generation, alongside a nearly immeasurable treasure trove of highly sought-after Porsche parts.

On-site lot viewings are available by appointment at Hagerty Garage + Social Savannah, 1446 Dean Forest Rd., Savannah, GA 31405.

The 1969 Porsche 911E Coupe occupied a sweet spot in the early 911 range. Introduced for the ’69 model year, the 911E sat between the entry-level 911T and the high-performance 911S. The “E” stood for Einspritzung ("injection" in German), highlighting its use of Bosch mechanical fuel injection (MFI) rather than carburetors.

For 1969, Porsche also introduced the longer wheelbase chassis, improving stability and making the 911 more predictable at speed, and debuted Porsche's innovative self-leveling Boge struts, a technological advancement that helped maintain consistent ride height and handling composure under varying loads. The 911E produced 140 horsepower from its 2.0-liter air-cooled flat-six. Standard gearbox was a five-speed manual.

Features such as ventilated disc brakes, Fuchs alloy wheels, and upgraded interior appointments distinguished it from the 911T.

This example is finished in Blood-Orange over a black interior, with vinyl upholstery on Recaro bucket seats. Notable features include 15" forged Fuchs “deep six” alloy wheels, the desirable "S" brakes with aluminum front calipers and ventilated discs at all four corners, and Bosch mechanical fuel injection. The original self-leveling front struts have been replaced with Koni 911S units. Inside, you'll find a leather-covered steering wheel, full instrumentation including a tachometer, reclining bucket seats, 2+2 seating, and a Blaupunkt cassette player.

Dr. Hens had known this car for decades before finally acquiring it in 2007. He disassembled its numbers-matching 2.0L flat-six and had the case overhauled by Ollie's Engineering of Santa Ana, California. The remaining components, including the cylinder heads, crankshaft, connecting rods, and camshaft towers, were rebuilt and put into storage.

In preparation for this sale, the original mechanically injected engine was finally reassembled and fully refurbished, with many desirable updates and modifications. This included a rebuild of the entire mechanical fuel injection (MFI) system. The finished numbers-matching engine has since been reinstalled in the car.

This 1969 Porsche 911E is now represented at no reserve by a Broad Arrow Specialist in Georgia with a tool roll and a clean Pennsylvania in the current owner's name.

Additional Information

Dr. Hens' representative states, “In the eighties Karl traveled to New York City with a friend whose blue 911 was undergoing repairs. They replaced the engine's main seal and reinstalled the engine. However, about 10 miles into the drive home, the car broke down. After changing the fuel filter they were able to continue the trip back to Albany, New York, with the car newly acquired by his friend. Years later, the friend went through a divorce and sold the car to Karl.

“Prior to Karl's ownership, the engine failed during a track event, the engine failed, and a different 2.2l engine was installed into the car. During the rebuild of the original, matching number MFI engine, he used factory oversized high compression 1969 911S pistons measuring 80.5 mm rather than the standard low compression 80.0 mm bore size pistons.”
