Description

Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, the svelte Hino Contessa blends European flair with Japanese engineering. The 1300S variant offered here is the sportiest trim in the lineup, with its dual carburetion and performance chassis tuning. Its rarity, motorsport associations, and distinctive design make it a niche collectible among enthusiasts seeking something truly unconventional. It also helps that Pete Brock beat the odds (and Carroll Shelby) with a Hino.

This 1967 Hino Contessa 1300S Coupe—believed by the seller to be one of only two Sport models stateside and covered in detail in an episode of the "Classics in Motion-A Deep Dive" episode—is finished in white over black vinyl and retains a period ‑correct presentation throughout. Said to have been imported from Japan in 2019 and acquired by the seller in 2025, it is powered by a rear-mounted 1,251cc GR100 inline‑four paired with a four‑speed manual transaxle. Notable equipment includes front disc brakes, dual Mikuni carburetors, fender mirrors, and an ANSA exhaust. This Contessa coupe has been tastefully modified with period-style modifications like front and rear bumper deletions, lowering springs, and 14” SSR wheels. Recent servicing includes carburetor overhauls, a brake system refresh, and fuel system cleaning.

This right-hand drive 1967 Hino Contessa 1300S is now offered with spare parts including removed engine tins, importation documentation, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

Additional Information

From the seller, “An incredibly rare piece of Japanese automotive history. The 1300S Sport package appears to be an authentic factory configuration, and this coupe drives exactly as such—light, rev happy, and uniquely charismatic. I’ve focused on proper mechanical sorting since purchase. If you’re looking for something truly distinctive, this is it.”
