Description
Volkswagen called its Type 1 Beetle the “small wonder.” Originally known as the “people’s car” — the English translation of the German Volkswagen — the Type 1 is a global icon, recognized by various other nicknames around the world, including of course, the Beetle. Following its entry into serial production after World War II, the Type 1 achieved the status of the best-selling car based on a single platform, with 21.5 million units sold.
This compact and practical Beetle exemplified innovation and design, characterized by its distinctive rounded shape, which was both aerodynamic and visually striking. With its rear-mounted, air-cooled 1600cc flat-four engine mated directly to the transaxle, a 94.5-inch wheelbase, and independent front suspension and swing axle rear suspension, these cars are still cherished for the fun-loving lifestyle that has developed around them.
This 1966 VW Beetle, nicknamed Josephine, was being built as a European Rallye car, but its owner and builder was unable to complete the project as he got older. The seller purchased the Beetle in February 2024 and brought it to its current condition, which includes a performance-tuned 2180cc engine with new twin 40mm Empi carburetors, thermostatically controlled external oil cooler and filter system, new Freeway Flyer transmission, custom short throw shifter and heavy-duty racing clutch, and much more.
