Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The 1966 Plymouth Belvedere II Super Stock drag racer was a product of Chrysler’s aggressive push into NHRA factory stock competition. Equipped with the legendary 426 Hemi engine and a 727 TorqueFlite transmission, the Belvedere was a purpose-built machine designed to dominate the quarter mile. With 4.10 gears and minimal factory options to reduce weight, it was a sleeper on the street but a beast on the strip.
One of the most notable examples was raced by Judy Lilly, one of the first women to receive factory backing from Chrysler. Her Belvedere II was specially built with weight-saving measures like deleted undercoating and sound deadening, and a prototype steel hood scoop that would later appear on RO23 lightweight drag cars.
This 1966 Belvedere II is hardly the meek family car it was when it rolled out of the factory with a 318-cubic-inch V8 engine. Built in the spirit of those rare factory drag racers, its original powerplant has been swapped with a 383 cu-in V8 with Six-Barrel carburetion and three-speed automatic transmission. It has the RO23-style hood, Weld Racing wheels, trunk-mounted battery, and easy to view cowl-mounted tach and gauges, capturing the soul of those famous Super Stock drag racers of the 1960s.
