Description
They called their dealers “the friendly giant killers.” 1966 Rambler Rebel marked American Motors Corporation’s (AMC) bold reentry into the performance car market. Reviving the “Rebel” name from its groundbreaking 1957 predecessor, the 1966 model was introduced as a top-trim, two-door hardtop version of the Rambler Classic. It featured AMC's 327-cubic-inch V8 engine, delivering 270 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual or optional automatic transmission and optional limited-slip differential — ingredients that hinted at muscle car aspirations.
Though not radically new in design, the Rebel stood out with its crisp roofline, bucket seats, and unique badging. It was essentially a performance-oriented package built on existing Rambler architecture, reflecting AMC’s limited budget and strategic pivot under new leadership. George Abernathy, who succeeded George Romney, aimed to shed Rambler’s economy-car image and move the brand upmarket.
Despite modest sales compared to rivals, the 1966 Rebel was a sleeper hit and a precursor to AMC’s later muscle cars like the 1970 Rebel Machine that it was based on. Total production of the ’66 Rebel was just 7,512, but it demonstrated that even America’s smallest automaker could produce a “giant killer” with muscle and flair — without abandoning its practical roots.
