Description
The 1800-series Volvos presented classy European motoring through a scrutinous Swedish lens. The cars had a remarkable build quality and attention to detail, while also putting a focus on safety, which set Volvo's first true sports car easily on par with anything in its class from German or British contemporaries. The original P1800 was designed by a subsidiary of Ghia, while assembly was contracted out to Jensen in the UK. By the time the 1800S was introduced, Volvo had brought production back to Sweden to maintain quality standards and implement some running changes. This included an upgraded M30 rear axle and an additional 15 horsepower for 1966, making the zippy Swedish coupe even more fun to slide around Scandinavian streets.
This 1966 Volvo 1800S has benefitted from a 25-year-long refurbishment process, according to the seller, with work beginning by repainting the car in its current Lotus Green. The 4-cylinder, 1,778cc B18 engine reportedly underwent a rebuild during this time, which feeds from dual SU carburetors and is harnessed by a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Inside, the cabin has been recovered with tan upholstery, with a wood dash framing turquoise-dialed gauge pods, accented by a wood Moto Lita steering wheel.
The car sits on 15" Panasport wheels wearing recently-installed tires, shielded by front and rear mudflaps. Additional work in preparation for the sale is reported to include an air-conditioning refrigerant recharge as well as replacement of suspension components and the thermostat.
The car was acquired by the current owner's late husband circa 1998, and it was inherited by the current owner in 2021.
This 1966 Volvo 1800S is now offered by the seller on behalf of the consigning representative in Indiana with a clean Pennsylvania title in the current owner's name.
