Description
In the early 1960s, the global automotive landscape was undergoing a dramatic transformation. European manufacturers dominated international racing circuits, while American automakers were beginning to explore new ways to assert their performance credentials. It was during this pivotal era, in 1962, that Carroll Shelby — a former chicken farmer, World War II Army Air Corps pilot, and winner of the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans — seized an opportunity that would change automotive history.
Shelby envisioned a car that could challenge Europe’s best on the track by blending lightweight British engineering with raw American horsepower. He found the perfect foundation in the AC Ace, a nimble British roadster with elegant aluminum bodywork. By replacing its modest engine with Ford’s robust 260- and 289-cu-in V8, Shelby created a machine that was both brutally fast and beautifully balanced. Built at Shelby-American Inc. in Los Angeles, the result was the Shelby Cobra — an icon that redefined American performance and became a formidable presence in motorsport.
With only a limited number of original Cobras produced between 1962 and 1967, their rarity and pedigree quickly elevated them to legendary and unobtainable status. Today, faithful recreations remain among the most revered and sought-after American performance cars.
