Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
“Gran Sport. The Skylark with the wildcat heart.” The 1965 Buick Skylark Gran Sport marked Buick’s bold entry into the muscle car era. Introduced mid-year as a performance-oriented version of the Skylark, it was Buick’s response to the success of the Pontiac GTO. Built on GM’s A-body platform, the Gran Sport retained the Skylark’s refined styling but packed serious performance upgrades under the hood.
At its heart was a 401-cubic inch “nailhead” V8, rebranded as a 400 to comply with GM’s intermediate car engine size limit. This engine produced 325 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque, earning it the nickname “Wildcat 445.” The Gran Sport package also included a beefed-up frame borrowed from the convertible model, heavy-duty suspension components, and larger brakes.
Visually, the Gran Sport was subtle, distinguished mainly by discreet badging. It was available in three body styles: pillared coupe, convertible, and the sleek hardtop coupe like this example. Despite its understated looks, the Gran Sport delivered strong performance, as Motor Trend (May 1965) noted, “0–60 mph times below eight seconds, and a quarter-mile E.T. of 16.6 seconds at 86 mph.”
Nearly 70,000 units were sold in 1965, establishing the Gran Sport as a cornerstone of Buick’s performance legacy. As the company rightly claimed: “It’s a new kind of Buick.”
