Description
Introduced in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type stunned the automotive world with its sleek, aerodynamic design, advanced engineering, and remarkable performance — all at a fraction of the cost of its European rivals. Legend has it that when it went on display at the Geneva Motor Show, none other than Enzo Ferrari remarked that the E-type (known as the “XKE” in the U.S.) was the most beautiful car he’d ever seen. Designed by noted aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer, the E-type was meant to cheat the wind, but its glass covered headlights, long hood, short rear deck, and compound curves also coincidentally looked great.
By 1964, the Series I had matured into a refined yet thrilling machine, retaining the original 3.8-liter inline-six engine that delivered 265 horsepower. With a 0-60 mph time of around seven seconds and a top speed of 150 mph, the Series I E-type was near the top of the food chain and was indeed quicker than numerous sports cars with a much higher price tag.
The Jag’s 3.8 was paired with a four-speed Moss gearbox and featured triple SU carburetors, independent rear suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes — technologies that were cutting-edge for the time. Inside, the E-Type featured aluminum-trimmed dash panels, toggle switches, and leather bucket seats.
