Description
By blending the utility of a pickup truck with the comfort and styling of a passenger car, the Chevrolet El Camino became one of the most iconic and unique vehicles in American automotive history. First introduced in 1959, the El Camino was Chevrolet’s answer to the Ford Ranchero, which debuted two years earlier. Built on the full-size Impala platform, the first-generation El Camino offered car-like handling with a usable truck bed, but it lasted only two years due to slow sales.
The El Camino returned in 1964, this time based on the Chevelle A-body platform, marking the beginning of its most popular era. This second generation offered a wide range of trims and engines (up to a 327 cu-in V8), making it a favorite among performance enthusiasts. The automotive media was impressed, too.
"Every once in a while, we come up with a test car that attracts attention as though it were magnetized," Hot Rod magazine wrote about the car-truck hybrid. "Chevelle's El Camino falls into this category, for it draws raves [everywhere it goes].”
This 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle El Camino received a number of upgrades under previous ownership, including a 350 cubic-inch V8, front disc brakes, a repaint, and an updated interior.
