Description
In 1961, Chevrolet’s bold new full-size lineup left the previous year’s wide grille accents and large fins behind, in favor of a simpler grille and a cleaner, finless rear end. By 1963, full-size Chevys had an even smoother look, with additional chrome up front, a cleaner side body line, and a tidy, tweaked-rectangle frame around the taillamps. Two-door, four-door, and station wagon body styles were available in the Bel Air trim level, which sat on GM’s X-frame chassis.
There were numerous engine options in 1963 including a 230 cu-in inline Six, 283- and 327-inch midrange V8s, and tire-burning 409s that topped out at 425 horsepower. And backing those powerful V8s were three-speed, three-speed with overdrive, and four-speed manual transmissions, along with a two-speed Powerglide automatic. Combined with the sleek styling, these Chevys were the perfect mix of beauty and power—and 60 years later, they’re automotive icons.
This straight 1963 Bel Air two-door sedan started life as a six-cylinder but now sports a 383 cu-in stroker V8 for additional power. And the swapped-in five-speed manual makes it more fun to drive on the street, and easier to cruise on the highway.
