The Triumph Motor Company launched the TR3 in October 1955 as a successor to the TR-2. The new model was powered by the same 1,991 cc, straight-four, overhead valve engine as its predecessor. Subsequent changes included a larger engine and adding front disc brakes instead of drums all around.

Triumph executed a visual refresh in 1957, and these cars are now unofficially referred to as TR3A models. The nose panel with a wide-mouth, egg-crate grille and the headlamps were slightly recessed for a smoother line. Most significantly, the car’s grille grew wider, and the headlamps were slightly recessed for a smoother line.

The final variant, termed the TR3B, was offered concurrent with the new TR4, which started production in 1961. In fact, the TR3B was a special short-production run produced in response to dealer concerns that the buying public might not welcome the TR4. It has the classic look of the TR3 but the superior 2,138 cc inline-four engine of the TR4 producing 110 hp, along with the TR4’s all synchromesh four speed manual transmission. Offered only as 1962 model, just 3,331 TR3B models were produced.

Ownership History

This 1962 Triumph TR3B was restored in 2004 by Sports Car Factory in Thompson, Ohio, just before the consignor, an avid British sports car enthusiast, acquired it.
