The 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster emerged as one of the most dramatic statements of personal luxury of the early 1960s. Introduced mid‑year, it transformed the already stylish “Bullet Bird” into a true grand-touring showpiece. Ford worked with designer Bud Kaufman to revive the glamour of the 1950s two‑seat T-Bird while keeping the practicality of a four-seater. The result was the striking tonneau cover, a sleek fiberglass shell that flowed over the rear seats to create the illusion of a two‑place cockpit—one of the era’s most distinctive styling flourishes.
The Sport Roadster also showcased Ford’s new Kelsey‑Hayes wire wheels, a $372 option that instantly became a Thunderbird signature. Beneath the sculpted hood sat the dependable 390ci, 300 hp V8, delivering confident highway performance and smooth, refined power, backed by a three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission.
Limited production—just over 1,400 units for 1962—ensured exclusivity, and the combination of luxury, bold design, and low volume has made the ’62 Sport Roadster one of the most desirable Thunderbirds ever.
This 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster is now represented by a Broad Arrow Specialist at no reserve in Georgia with a clean Florida title in the current owner's name.
