Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The 1961 Ford Thunderbird marked the beginning of the third generation of this iconic American car, following up the car's three-year "Squarebird" design with the restyled “Bullet Bird” from 1961 to '63. Designed by Bill Boyer, the 1961 Thunderbird featured a sleeker, more aerodynamic body compared to its predecessors. The most notable innovation was the "Swing Away" steering wheel, which allowed the steering column to move approximately 18 inches to the right when the gear selector was in the “park” position, facilitating easier entry and exit for the driver.
Under the hood, the '61 T-bird was powered by a robust 390 cubic-inch FE-series V8 engine, delivering 300 horsepower. It was paired with a three-speed Cruise-O-Matic MX automatic transmission. The 1961 model also introduced several power-operated accessories, including power windows, seats, steering, and brakes, which were considered luxury features at the time.
The Thunderbird's popularity was further boosted by its role as the pace car for the 1961 Indianapolis 500 and its presence in President John F. Kennedy's inaugural parade. These high-profile appearances underscored the Thunderbird's status as a symbol of American automotive excellence.
