Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Introduced as a top-tier trim level of Chevrolet's Bel Air line, the Impala debuted in 1958 as a one-year-only body style before becoming its own model line in 1959. That makes this ’58 Chevrolet Bel Air Impala Sport Coupe (and its convertible sibling) both significant and pivotal in Chevrolet’s design and marketing strategy.
Designed during a time of economic recession, Chevrolet took a bold step by offering the Impala as a more luxurious and performance-oriented option. The upscale model featured a shorter greenhouse, longer rear deck, and deeply sculpted rear fenders, setting it apart from other Bel Airs. The rear end was especially notable for its triple taillight design, a styling cue that would become an Impala hallmark.
Inside, the 1958 Impala offered a more refined interior with a taller instrument panel, bench seats with adjustable backs, and upscale trim. Under the hood, buyers could choose from a range of engines, including the powerful 348 cubic-inch V8 with triple two-barrel carburetors, producing up to 280 horsepower — the mill that the original owner of this one chose.
Built on a new X-frame chassis, the 1958 Impala offered improved ride quality and handling. Chevrolet produced 125,480 Sport Coupes that year, making it a commercial success despite the economic climate.
