The 1958 Ford Thunderbird marked a turning point for Ford’s iconic personal-luxury coupe. As the first of the second-generation “Square Bird” models, it represented a bold shift in design and philosophy—transforming the Thunderbird from a sporty two-seater into a more luxurious four-passenger grand touring car. The decision proved immediately successful: sales doubled over the prior year, and the new Thunderbird earned Motor Trend’s coveted “Car of the Year” award for 1958.
Distinctive features include the power-operated convertible top that folds completely into the trunk, a signature engineering innovation of the model. The unibody construction—Ford’s first—delivers a solid structure while providing generous interior space. Inside, the Thunderbird features wraparound instrumentation, polished aluminum trim, and contoured four-passenger seating.
This 1958 Ford Thunderbird Convertible is one of approximately 2,134 produced for the 1958 model year and is finished in its factory-correct Colonial White over Gulfstream and White two-tone vinyl interior. According to the seller, it was “restored by W.W. Motor Cars & Parts of Broadway, Virginia, between 1998 and 1999. The restoration combined factory components from two Thunderbirds with correct replacement parts, resulting in a highly-accurate and highly detailed finish.”
Following completion, the car became a consistent show winner, earning multiple awards including an AACA Grand National First Prize in 2001. Power comes from Ford’s 352 cubic-inch FE-series V8 rated at 300 horsepower and paired with a three-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission.
Representing the debut of Ford’s “Square Bird” generation, this award-winning example combines elegance, innovation, and craftsmanship in one of the most influential American designs of its era.
