The 1954 Dodge Coronet Royal 500 was a special, mid‑year commemorative model created to celebrate Dodge’s first‑ever role providing the Indianapolis 500 pace car. In 1954, Dodge President William Newberg led the race in a yellow, Hemi‑powered Dodge convertible—a milestone for the brand and a major promotional opportunity. To capitalize on the event, Dodge introduced the Royal 500 package, offered exclusively on the Royal convertible.
The Royal series itself debuted in 1954 as the top trim level in Dodge’s lineup, positioned above the Coronet and Meadowbrook. It carried the new 241ci Red Ram Hemi V8, an engine known for its hemispherical combustion chambers and strong performance for the era. The Royal 500 trim elevated the standard Royal convertible with visually striking and upscale enhancements, including chrome wire wheels, distinctive badging, and a dramatic continental spare‑tire kit mounted at the rear. Production was limited, with 701 pace‑car replicas officially built, and all were thought to be produced with factory-applied Indianapolis 500 Pace Car lettering and decals.
