Description

Mercedes-Benz introduced the 170 series in 1931 at the Paris Auto Salon as part of a strategy to expand beyond the luxury segment during economic challenges of the 1930s. Designed under Hans Nibel, the model featured an innovative chassis with all-independent suspension and a lightweight frame, improving ride quality and handling for its class. Between 1931 and 1941, approximately 70,000 units were produced in various configurations, including sedans, cabriolets, roadsters, taxis, ambulances, and commercial vehicles. Among these, the Cabriolet A occupied the top tier, built by Mercedes-Benz’s Sindelfingen coachbuilding division. Priced at $1,459 when new, it offered a custom body at a much lower cost than the flagship 540K.

The example offered is a 1941 Mercedes-Benz 170 V Cabriolet A finished in black and white with black leather upholstery. It retains period-correct details such as Bosch headlamps, factory hubcaps, and brightwork. The canvas convertible top is well-fitted, and the interior includes varnished wood trim, leather upholstery, and an ivory steering wheel. Power comes from a 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed gearbox. With only 794 Cabriolet A models built, this car represents a rare example of prewar Mercedes-Benz engineering and Sindelfingen craftsmanship.
