He loved sharing his knowledge and passion with friends and family, and he could frequently be found taking his grandchildren for a joyride in one of his cherished Chevys. * * *   The 1933 Willys 77 was conceived as a last‑ditch effort to keep bankrupt Willys‑Overland alive after the Great Depression. All of the company’s resources were focused on this one model — which resulted in forward-thinking styling and an early example of a compact car.

The 77 was a unique machine: crafted by maverick designer Amos Northup in both coupe and sedan body styles, its short 100” wheelbase and narrow 51” track gave it unusual proportions. The mostly steel body loosely followed some of the popular designs of the day, with Northup adding unique touches like an aggressively sloped nose, teardrop fenders, and seashell wheels.

77s rode on a sturdy ladder frame with an X‑member, and used beam axles, semi‑elliptic leaf springs, and 4‑wheel mechanical brakes. And the 48-horsepower, 134ci inline four cylinder was bolted down with Chrysler‑licensed “Floating Power” engine mounts that reduced vibration. The 77’s unique look and light weight eventually caught the eye of hot rodders in the 1960s, and many were highly modified to compete in gasser drag racing classes.

This machine is a great example: it utilizes many aftermarket Willys Hot Rods components, including a perimeter frame, gasser solid front and ladder-bar rear suspensions, a fiberglass body finished in red, and A/Gas-style slot mags wearing big and little tires. It’s powered by a modified 327ci Chevy V8 backed by a Hurst-shifted 4-speed manual transmission. And it’s equipped with creature comforts including a reupholstered interior, a tilt steering column, and aftermarket gauges.

Known Imperfections
