Description
The 1928 Chevrolet One-Ton Truck marked a significant step in Chevrolet’s early commercial vehicle development. Introduced during a time of rapid industrial growth and increasing demand for reliable work vehicles, this truck was part of Chevrolet’s broader effort to compete with Ford in the light-duty truck market.
Built on the Capital Series LO and LP chassis, the 1928 One-Ton featured a 171 cubic-inch inline 4-cylinder engine, producing around 22 horsepower. Though modest by today’s standards, this engine was durable and well-suited for hauling and delivery tasks. The ’28 One-Ton came with a four-speed manual transmission, offering better control and torque for heavy loads.
One of the key advancements in 1928 was the introduction of four-wheel mechanical brakes on the LP models, a significant safety improvement over earlier rear-only braking systems. The truck rode on a 107-inch wheelbase and featured a stake bed or other body styles that were often custom-built by third-party coachbuilders. Chevrolet’s approach was to sell the chassis and drivetrain, allowing buyers to choose or build the body that best suited their needs, be it a stake bed like this one, delivery van, or even a hearse. This flexibility made the truck popular among farmers, small businesses, and tradespeople.
