Description

For 1968, Chevrolet pretty much left well enough alone with its instant hit, the Camaro. The ’67 edition had proven to be a worthy answer to the Mustang, with sales numbers looking strong and Camaro winning 10 of 13 races in the Trans-Am Series. With that kind of momentum, there was no need for major changes.

Some thoughtful minor alterations were made, however. For example, the vent windows that framed the A-pillars were eliminated. With those gone, Chevy had to do something about getting airflow to the driver, so GM installed air vents below the dash, a feature it called “Astro-Ventilation.”

The 1968 Camaro buyers who chose a larger SS engine (350 or 396 cu-in V8) received chrome inserts on the hood, and top-performance models also received multi-leaf rear suspension. In addition, the shocks on all ’68 Camaros were staggered to get rid of a wheel hop issue, the NHTSA mandated side marker lights on the front and rear quarter panels, Chevy moved its engine displacement emblems to the front of the fenders, and rearview mirrors were now rectangular.

This 1968 Camaro RS/SS Sport Coupe has been in the same family since new and was undergoing a restoration when the patriarch of the family passed away.

Ownership History

This 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS was purchased new from Frontier Chevrolet in Bandera, Texas, and it remained with the same owner until his passing in 2020, when his son accepted ownership of the car. “My dad was in the middle of the restoration project when he passed, and the car is currently covered in my garage. He always loved the original look of the car and was making it look that way again.”
