Description
In the 1970s, Porsche faced a pivotal moment with its iconic 911. Stringent U.S. regulations threatened the model's future, prompting the development of a potential successor: the 928. This bold departure from Porsche's rear-engine tradition debuted at the 1977 Geneva Auto Show, targeting the American market with a front-engine, V8-powered grand tourer configuration. The 928's design was revolutionary, featuring a low, wide stance, elongated hood, and distinctive rounded rear. Its futuristic aesthetic, complemented by an advanced, 4.5-liter water-cooled V8, garnered significant acclaim despite initial skepticism from marque purists. Porsche debuted the 928 S model for 1980, distinguished by new spoilers, wider wheels and a bump in displacement to 4.7 liters. The 1984 model year added higher compression for more torque, Bosch LH Jetronic fuel-injection and digital Bosch EZF ignition with twin distributors, and a four-speed automatic transmission. The 928 represented Porsche's vision for a high-performance grand tourer capable of effortless long-distance travel. Today, it remains a compelling option for enthusiasts seeking a blend of classic Porsche engineering and grand touring comfort, offering an exhilarating driving experience that continues to impress even by modern standards.
