Cadillac unveiled its new “Coupe de Ville” inspired by French de laville and coupé, meaning of the town, and pays homage to the French couper or to cut, pointing to the shortening wheelbase of two-door cars. General Motors announced the Coupe de Ville at its inaugural 1949 Motorama event held at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, with a Boston extension venue. It was built on a Cadillac Sixty Special chassis and featured a dummy air-scoop, chrome trim around front wheel openings, and a one-piece windshield and rear glass. The Series 62 Coupe de Ville would later be joined by the Series 62 Sedan de Ville in 1956. Given their sales success, it was only natural that the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville were moved to their own separate series in 1959, the Series 6300, being joined by a DeVille convertible in 1964.
This stunning 1958 Cadillac Sedan DeVille, the penultimate model year before Cadillac created its own series, remained in the same extended family for well over 30 years until it was recently acquired by the current owner. It features a code “46” Turquoise and Black cloth/leather interior which is accompanied by impeccable carpets, headliner, interior trim, instrument panel and door panels. The exterior has been refinished in the proper code “28” Turquoise with a white hardtop and all the chrome and brightwork are in exquisite condition. This example left no options to chance and is equipped with factory air conditioning, power windows, power steering, power brakes, push-button AM radio and more.
