While visiting the United States in 1958, Mr. Katsuji Kawamata, President of Nissan Motors Japan, attended a showing of a Broadway Musical, My Fair Lady. The title stuck with him and when the company required a name for its new sports car offering, Kawamata was prepared with the perfect moniker. The Fairlady, marketed as the Datsun Z series in the USA, became a legendary success across the globe, earning high praise as a reliable, affordable, high-performance alternative to European imports. With the standardization of fuel injection and increased demands for technology and luxury for the 1980’s market, Nissan would launch the new Fairlady Z (300ZX in America) with massive changes to the sports car formula.
