Description

Following the immediate success of the Mach 1 model upon its introduction in 1969, it replaced the Mustang GT outright in 1970. The Mach 1 was only made available in the "SportsRoof" body style – distinguished by its body style code 63C – and received a number of cosmetic and performance-oriented upgrades such as "Mach 1" emblazoned rocker panels, a honeycomb rear panel, a black-striped hood with a functional scoop, competition suspension, deluxe interior, rear deck spoiler, and rear "Sport Slats." Engines ranged from the 351 cu-in small-block V8 to the 428 cu-in big-block "Cobra Jet" V8 with or without Ram Air induction, producing a factory-rated 335-horsepower (but estimated to produce closer to 400-horsepower). A minor update in 1970 brought dual-beam headlights, revised bucket seats, deep dish sports wheels, as well as new side and rear badging and striping. Mustangs equipped with the Cobra Jet engine remained at the pinnacle of American street performance for the next 20 years, and well-optioned examples like the vehicle offered here continue to be eminently collectible.

This car is part of the Retro Motors Collection, which comprises over 30 cars largely from the 1950s through today, with a focus on American muscle and high-powered European sports cars. View the full collection here.
