Description

The BMW 2002 emerged from a collaboration between Helmut Werner Bönsch and Alex von Falkenhausen, who each installed a 2.0-liter “M10” engine in their personal BMW 1600-2 cars and subsequently proposed to BMW's board to produce a two-liter version of the 1600-2. This move coincided with American importer Max Hoffman's request for a sportier version of the 02 series for the U.S. market. Consequently, the 2002 was introduced with two engine options: the base 2002 with a single-carburetor engine producing 99 horsepower and the more powerful 2002 ti with a dual-carburetor engine delivering 118 horsepower. In 1969, the 2002 Automatic was launched with the base engine and a ZF three-speed automatic transmission. By 1971, the 2002 ti was replaced by the 2002 tii, featuring a fuel-injected engine with 128 horsepower and a top speed of 115 mph.

Following BMW’s lead for increased performance, many owners opted to do similar sporting modifications to their 2002. From different interiors to larger engines and even completely redesigned bodies, the only limiting factor was the owner’s imagination. While most owners perform minor upgrades to their cars, rarely do cars so thoroughly reimagined surface such as this 1971 2002 tii, offering a compelling opportunity for the next enthusiastic owner.
