The third-generation Porsche Boxster and Cayman, known as the 981 generation and built for model years 2013 to 2016, was a significant evolution for both models. The 981 cars replaced the outgoing 987 model with sharper styling, various engineering refinements, and improved overall driving dynamics. The resulting Boxster and Cayman moved closer to their legendary 911 sibling in performance while maintaining a more accessible price and better everyday usability.

Technically, the new Boxster roadster and Cayman coupe were built around a thoroughly redeveloped chassis that was stiffer and lighter than the previous generation. Both models featured the rear-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout that were hallmarks since both cars’ debut, and both benefitted from longer wheelbases and wider tracks. The base engine for the 981 Cayman and Boxster was a new 2.7-liter naturally aspirated flat-six mill that generated 265 hp and could be paired with either a 6-speed manual or Porsche’s 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. The 315-hp S variants used a 3.4-liter engine, delivering noticeably stronger midrange thrust and higher top-end power. Drivers could further enhance engagement with options like Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), and the Sport Chrono Package, which added launch control and configurable drive dynamics.

Porsche added a GTS trim for the 2015 and 2016, which increased horsepower over the S trims to 330 hp and added distinct styling cues and more performance hardware. The Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4 were added in 2016. The Spyder used the 911 Carrera S’s 3.8-liter flat-six tuned to produce 375 hp, a lightweight manually operated roof, and a six-speed manual transmission. Similarly, the Cayman GT4 was equipped with the same larger engine and various track-oriented suspension enhancements.

What set the 2013-2016 Porsche Boxster and Cayman apart from many competitors was not only their power and agility, but also the way they balanced everyday usability with performance. The mid-engine layout created an exceptionally responsive car, interiors were purposeful and premium, and a variety of trims and options allowed owners to tailor their cars to specific driving preferences. And these are the same characteristics today’s colletors appreciate about the 981 Boxster and Cayman.
