Model overview

Model description

The Dodge Dart’s sheet metal was revised again for 1966 to bring it into line with the big cars. The sides were sculptured and the front and rear squared off rather like the Coronet, and with a square grille with horizontal bars. The 1966 Dodge Darts were slightly longer and wider, but sales dropped. Big changes were ahead for 1967.

The Dart was built in three series – 170, 270 and GT. The base engine was still the 101 bhp 170 cid slant six, while a 225 cid slant six good for 145 bhp was a popular option. Two V-8 engines were available. There was the 180 bhp 273 cid 2-barrel engine and the much livelier 235 bhp 4-barrel high-compression unit.

The Dart 170 was the base model with the two-door Sedan starting at $2,094. Other 170 models were a four-door sedan and station wagon. The mid-range 1966 Dodge Dart was the 270, which offered two- and four-door sedans, a two-door hardtop, convertible and station wagon.

The Dart GT was the top-line model and available as a two-door hardtop and convertible. Dart GT prices began at $2,417.

Options remained the same for the 1966 Dart. They included an AM radio, power convertible top, tinted glass, luggage rack and power rear window on station wagons, and power steering. Air conditioning was still a dealer-installed accessory and automatic transmission could be push button or column shift. Bucket seats and floor shift were optional on the GT.

Dodge offered 21 colors for the 1966 Dart, including Sandstone, Mauve, Maroon, Deep Plum, Silver, Black, Light Blue, Medium Blue, Dark Blue, Light Green, Dark Green, Medium Turquoise, Dark Turquoise, Bright Red, Red, Yellow, Cream, White, Beige, Saddle Bronze, and Gold.

Dodge’s big new model for 1966 was the fastback Charger, based on the Coronet, and following the concept of Plymouth’s smaller Barracuda. A total of 37,300 were sold and Dodge maintained seventh place in U.S. production with 532,026 cars delivered for the year.
