Model overview

Model description

When the Chevelle Malibu was introduced for 1964, it gave Chevrolet four separate production lines, and scrambled some other series. One of the victims was the 1964 Chevy II. Sales plunged 30 percent as buyers stepped up for the Chevelle whose 115-inch wheelbase was five inches longer than the Chevy II and four inches shorter than the Impala.

Exterior trim was reduced for the Chevy II so that the 1964 models resembled the original 1962 line. The Super Sport had become its own series, but this did not include a convertible. Since the convertible was no longer available in the Nova series, the division had basically axed 24,000 sales of a model that was already tooled up and would have cost nothing to continue to build. 1964 Nova Sport Coupe and the clumsily named Super Sport Sport Coupe sales were lumped together (30,827), so the exact number of Super Sport Sport Coupes is unknown.

The Chevy II 300 series was discontinued, since it was deemed too close to the Nova, and that left the three-model 100 Series (2-and 4-door sedans) and Nova Series, which included 2- and 4-door sedans a 2-door Sport Coupe and a 4-door Station Wagon.

Base engine remained the 90 bhp, 153 cid four, but few buyers chose those. Most went for the 120 bhp, 194 cid six, while 25,083 buyers opted for the 195 bhp, 283 cid V-8. Optional V-8 engines included a dealer-installed 327, but this was expensive..

Options included air conditioning, tinted glass, Super Sport equipment package for Sport Coupe, comfort and convenience group, heavy duty brakes, power brakes, power steering, pushbutton radio, front seat belts, wire wheel covers, and two-tone paint. The Super Sport package included a vinyl interior, front bucket seats and console.

Chevrolet offered 15 exterior colors for the 1964 Chevy II and 10 two-tones. They included Tuxedo Black, Meadow Green, Bahama Green, Silver Blue, Daytona Blue, Azure Aqua, Laguna Aqua, Almond Fawn, Ember Red, Saddle Tan, Ermine White, Desert Beige, Satin Silver, Goldwood Yellow, and Palomar Red.

Chevrolet would concentrate on the new Chevelle line for the next year or so, but as the Chevelle grew in size, the sporty Chevrolet Nova SS hardtop would gradually occupy its own niche.
