Model overview
Model description
For the 1968 model year, Chevy’s popular Chevelle was completely redesigned. The evolution away from the 3-box design, to the coke-bottle design, and now to the fastback design was complete. It featured flowing fenders and a tapered front end. There were many variants of the second-generation Chevelle, including coupe, sedan, sport coupe, sport sedan, convertible, wagon, and a two-door utility pickup sold as the El Camino.
Trims for the 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle were 300, 300 Deluxe, and Malibu. The “Concours Package” was available for the sedan, sport sedan, wagon and hardtop coupe. Engine offerings continued to be a base six-cylinder, and a trio of 327 cid V-8s, with output ranging up to 325 hp. The top performance version continued to be the SS 396, which was offered in the sport coupe, convertible and El Camino. The Super Sports models featured a big-block 396 cid V-8 under a unique power-dome hood, making up to 375 hp.
The SS 396 and Concours models received GM’s hide-a-way windshield wipers, which would be added to the rest of the lineup in later mode years. Other options included dual exhaust, hydraulic steering, power seats and air conditioning.
