Model overview

Model description

Chevrolet's sixth-generation Camaro, introduced for the 2016 model year, was the swan song of the model's second run. With roughly 350,000 units built through the 2024 model year, this iteration of Camaro pushed performance boundaries and earned its place in the model's storied lore.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro used GM's Alpha platform, which was also shared with the Cadillac ATS and CTS. The new Camaro was subsequently lighter and smaller than the fifth-generation model it replaced, which translated to a sharper driving experience. The car proved to be a worth competitor to the Ford Mustang, and also to European sports coupes.

Under the hood, Chevrolet offered a range of powertrains to appeal to a broad spectrum of buyers. The lineup began with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produced 275 horsepower, proving that efficiency and performance could coexist. The 3.6-liter V-6 delivered 335 horsepower and a broad torque curve, while the SS trim packed a 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 that made 455 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, available with either a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. The result was a car that could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds while maintaining the everyday usability of a modern GT. Each engine benefitted from direct injection, variable valve timing, and weight-saving materials that helped the sixth-generation Camaro shed over 200 pounds compared to its predecessor.

Chevrolet refined the sixth-gen Camaro throughout its production run. Early models introduced driver-centric interiors with deeply recessed gauges and an available 8-inch infotainment touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2019 facelift brought a more aggressive front fascia, updated lighting, and improved aerodynamics. Subsequent updates added new appearance packages, enhanced track performance modes, and more sophisticated safety and convenience features. The result was a sports car that could double as a daily driver without losing its sense of occasion.

For those seeking peak performance, Chevrolet expanded the lineup with several notable variants. The Camaro ZL1, unveiled in 2017, became the halo model with the same supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 that was found in the Corvette Z06. The engine cranked out 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, and helped create supercar-level acceleration. Handling dynamics were shaped by magnetic ride control, Brembo brakes, and advanced aerodynamics. The ZL1 1LE took things further with track-tuned Multimatic DSSV dampers and lighter components, which transformed the Camaro into a legitimate circuit weapon. Meanwhile, the 1LE package—available across multiple trims—offered upgraded suspension, tires, and cooling systems for enthusiasts who wanted sharper handling without the ZL1’s $70,000 price tag.

The sixth-generation Camaro continued to up the model's performance ante while still keeping tractability top of mind. As such, the car marks a highpoint in Chevrolet's performance history, and serves as a worthy farewell to Chevrolet's classic pony car.
