When the third generation Acura Integra arrived for the 1997 model year, it introduced the unorthodox “bug-eye” headlight design. Though polarizing at the time, the Integra won over enthusiasts’ hearts with the Type-R. This hotted-up trim of the plucky Civic-based coupe visually differentiated itself from the rest of the Integra range with lower side skirts, a lower front lip, and a pronounced rear spoiler. The 1997 Acura Integra Type-R (known in other markets as the Honda Integra Type-R) came in any color you wanted, as long as it was Championship White. Price when new was about $25,000.
The changes were more than skin deep. The Integra Type-R came fitted with the B18C5 – a hand-assembled, four-cylinder VTEC engine. Though it had the same 1.8-liter displacement as the non-Type-R Integras, it was heavily reworked and retuned. Modifications included a larger throttle body, upgraded intake manifold, stronger connecting rods, and upgraded pistons among a host of other upgrades. The result was an output rating of 195 horsepower and 130 pound-feet of torque. Peak horsepower was made at a screaming 8,000 rpm.
A 5-speed manual routes power to the front wheels, employing closer gear ratios. Under the skin, there are also numerous reinforcements for improved chassis rigidity as well as stiffer suspension and a 10mm lower ride height. Larger disc brakes and Bridgestone RE0101 summer performance tires round out the handling package.
Acura also removed creature comforts like cruise control, sunroof, and some sound deadening materials to reduce weight. Even air conditioning was optional. Honda sold the Acura Integra Type-R in the United States in small numbers and only from 1997 until 2001. First-year 1997 cars are particularly rare with just 320 built.
