Model overview

Model description

The Ferrari 488 marked a transition for Maranello, moving the brand’s mid-engine V-8 offering away from normal aspiration to turbocharging (a first for Ferrari since the F40). The model replaced the well-regarded 458 Italia, and like its predecessor, it combined explosive speed with everyday usability. The model was introduced with the 2016 model year and ran through 2019, ultimately gaining the favor of both seasoned collectors and new buyers seeking one of the most complete modern Ferrari driving experiences.

At its core, the Ferrari 488 is built around a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with advanced aerodynamics and chassis control. Power comes from a 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, producing 661 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque in the 488 GTB. Ferrari engineered the turbo system to minimize lag and maintain linear power delivery. The engine is paired exclusively with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivering rapid shifts and helping the car reach 60 mph in roughly 3.0 seconds. Advanced systems such as Side Slip Control (SSC2), F1-Trac traction control, and an electronically controlled differential work together to make the 488 both incredibly fast and approachable at the limit. Aerodynamic tricks included a blown rear spoiler and active front aero that improved downforce without increasing drag.

Throughout its production run, Ferrari refined the 488 platform with several key variants. The 488 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) launched as the coupe, followed by the 488 Spider, which added a retractable hardtop while maintaining nearly identical performance. The Spider’s ability to deliver open-air driving without sacrificing rigidity or speed made it a standout in the segment. Both models featured continuous updates to software, suspension calibration, and interior technology, keeping the car competitive during its lifecycle.

The lineup expanded with more focused and higher-performance models that pushed the platform further. The 488 Pista, introduced in 2019, served as the track-focused evolution of the 488. Borrowing heavily from Ferrari’s racing programs, the Pista increased output to 710 horsepower, reduced weight significantly, and added aggressive aerodynamic elements, including the S-Duct front aero system. It delivered sharper responses, higher downforce, and a more intense driving experience than the standard GTB. Alongside it, the 488 Pista Spider combined these performance upgrades with open-top driving, creating one of the most extreme yet engaging convertible supercars Ferrari has produced.

Beyond factory models, the 488 also spawned race and special-series derivatives that reinforced its importance. The 488 Challenge and 488 GTE demonstrated the platform’s capability in motorsport, while the limited 488 Pista Piloti Ferrari edition celebrated Ferrari’s racing success with unique livery and exclusivity. These variants highlighted the car’s versatility, from road-going supercar to track-dominating machine.

What sets the Ferrari 488 apart is how effectively it balances raw performance with usability. The turbocharged V-8 delivers relentless acceleration, yet the chassis and electronic systems make it manageable for drivers of varying skill levels. Steering is quick and communicative, the brakes are powerful and consistent, and the overall package is confident at any speed. As one of Ferrari’s last non-hybrid V-8 supercars before the F8 Tributo and SF90, the 488 stands as a defining model—one that proved turbocharging could enhance, rather than diminish, the Ferrari driving experience.
