Accelerating Carroll Shelby’s legendary heritage, the 2011 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 seriously raised the all-around performance bar. At its heart was a new aluminum 5.4L DOHC 32-valve supercharged V8, which was 102 pounds lighter than the previous iron block. Delivering a staggering 550 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed manual, it could run from 0–60 in 4.1 seconds, and through the quarter in 12.4 at 117 mph.

Combined with electric power steering and lighter wheels, the 2011 GT500 weighed 150 pounds less than the previous model. With an SVT-tuned suspension, improved brakes, and revised spring rates and shock damping, the new GT500 was more balanced, quicker around a road course, and much more fun to drive. Styling remained unmistakably Shelby, and inside, leather seats were paired with a beefy shifter, an informative gauge cluster, and a high-end infotainment system.
