Built on Ford’s Panther platform, the CVPI featured a rugged body-on-frame construction that was ideal for the demanding conditions of police work. Its 4.6-liter SOHC V8 engine, paired with a heavy-duty four-speed automatic transmission, was engineered for long service life, often exceeding 200,000 miles in fleet use. Some Police Interceptors are still in service, while many others continued on in civilian life as taxis, with some travelling over 500,000 miles.

Durability was further enhanced by reinforced suspension components, high-capacity cooling systems, and stainless-steel dual exhaust.
