OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
“Introducing a completely new roadster. The unmistakable new Thunderbird.” — Ford
Following the retro-style craze of the early 2000s, Ford reintroduced the Thunderbird after a five-year hiatus. The new 11th-generation (2002-2005) two-seater was inspired by the styling of its 1950s “Baby Bird” sibling and built on the DEW98 platform shared with the Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Type. Designed to evoke nostalgia while offering modern performance and comfort, the 2002 model featured rounded lines, a removable hardtop with a porthole window, and a soft-top convertible option.
Under the hood, a Jaguar-sourced 3.9-liter V8 producing 252 horsepower sent power to the rear wheels, with a five-speed automatic transmission handling shifting duties. The car emphasized cruising comfort over aggressive performance, aligning with its heritage as a personal luxury vehicle, which was touted by Ford as “relaxed sportiness.” Inside, the Thunderbird offered leather-trimmed seats, chrome accents, and a dashboard design that echoed its classic predecessors.
Motor Trend magazine was on to something when it crowned the new two-seat Thunderbird “Car of the Year” in 2002, calling it “the perfect top-down getaway toy for two — and still a top performer.” As Ford said, “It’s time to take flight.”
