Description
Chevrolet’s sleek third-generation Camaro had hit its stride by 1985. Embracing its motorsport roots, Chevy introduced a high-performance Z28 variant — the IROC-Z. Unlike Camaro’s throttle-body-injected engines, the IROC-Z’s Tuned Port Injection V8 delivered impressive torque, enhancing the Camaro’s low-rpm grunt and drivability.
Visually, the 1985–1990 IROC-Zs distinguished themselves with aggressive ground effects, bold graphics, unique badging, 16-inch wheels, and a performance-tuned suspension. Inside, drivers enjoyed a surprisingly refined ride on the Camaro’s 101-inch wheelbase. The cabin featured supportive bucket seats, a sporty instrument cluster with a 145-mph speedometer and 7,000-rpm tachometer, and a full suite of power options.
Quick, agile, and unmistakably stylish, the IROC-Z became an icon of 1980s American performance — and remains a sought-after muscle car to this day. And even better, if you really want to turn up the wick, an IROC is a great platform for a truly wild build.
This 1987 IROC-Z has been enhanced with a supercharged small-block Chevy (SBC) 383 cu-in stroker V8, a fully built trans and rear end, and a host of performance and safety upgrades. And it recorded an eye-popping 886 horses and 736 pound-feet of torque on an engine dyno at Advanced Product Design, instantly making it one of the most intimidating rides at the local race day or cruise night.
